Lyrics for It Ain't Necessarily So.

George and Ira Gershwin

It ain't necessarily so,
it ain't necessarily so,
the things that you're liable to read in the bible,
it ain't necessarily so,

Well Moses was found in a stream,
ooo-ooh Moses was found in a stream,
then old Pharaoh's daughter who played in the water,
she fished Moses out of that stream,

Guitar solo Ooo-ooo-David was small but oh my,
aaaaahh-David was small but oh my,
but it was Goliath who lay down and dyeth,
yeah David was small but oh my!

Well-Jonah he lived in a whale,
Ooh-Jonah he lived in a whale,
he made his home in; that fishy abdomen,
yeh-Jonah he lived in a whale,

It ain't necessarily so,
It ain't necessarily so,
the things that your preacher is liable to teach yer,
It ain't necessarily so,

Song Facts etc

The song appears in Porgy and Bess and has been recorded by a great many people including Cab Calloway, and Sammy Davis Jnr.
The Honeycombs treatment of it is one of my favourite examples of what Martin Murray calls Honeycombising. Honey Lantree puts down a thumping tribal beat and the band have an absolute ball with the song. Little bursts of Hava Nagila and a snippet of Chopin's "Funeral March" to mourn the death of Goliath. Its a masterpiece of fun and excitement all in one.
